06/14/17: Renato completed an exterior painting project for our relatively large single family home in Stamford, CT last weekend. Project did not begin well especially with the prep, repair/carpentry work, but then Renato took full control and ensured that the work done was to our satisfaction. The final result is outstanding. Minor damage to window screens, gutters and plants. Ensure that your window screens, gutters, and shutters are numbered and stored indoors or if kept outdoor covered properly against the elements. The project can be extensively delayed due to rain and you may find yourself dealing with insects and/or flooding in basement and dirty/bent/ mismatched screens/gutters/shutters. Overall we had a good team working on our project and we are satisfied with the finished product. The house looks great! Broomfield House Painting
Paint supplies cost anywhere from $10 to $100 or more depending on what you need. Painters will typically provide most of the supplies for a project, but sometimes they will allow you to pay for solely labor if you provide all the materials yourself. You might decide to do a DIY paint job down the road. In which case having these supplies on-hand will save you time and money. Broomfield House Painting
Hi Conaz, good question. There’s a really good breakdown of all painting equipment (cost, supplies list etc.) here . As far as your other costs, I would break it down into categories, similar to how an accountant would do it: Marketing Expense, Insurance/Workers Comp., Gas/Mileage. Once you’ve discovered this monthly overhead you can determine your markup. We always try to make 40-50% gross profit on a paint job before any other expenses. Your net profit will be determined by the size of your business. For example, one painting company with 40 employees may only have a net profit of 10%, but a smaller operation; One owner and one crew may have a net profit of 35%. You should decide beforehand what you want to make per job, factoring in all your costs, and then create a consistent bidding process to make what you want. House Painting Broomfield CO
If you choose to paint your home yourself, you can save on the cost of labor. But if you don’t have the time or experience to tackle to job, it’s worth paying the going rate for painters in your area. If your home requires power washing prior to painting, and if it requires caulking for windows and doors, the cost will also rise. Whether paint is applied with a sprayer, brushed, or rolled on will also factor into the price. A painting pro can easily offer an estimate prior to undertaking an exterior painting job. Get estimates from several contractors, request and contact references, search for complaints at the Better Business Bureau[12] and check that the company is properly bonded and insured, as well as licensed in your state[13] . Only pay a small deposit, and don't pay the entire amount until the job is finished to your complete satisfaction (both painting and cleanup).
I stumbled across this article as I was looking into “How to estimate paint jobs”. This is totally awesome article! I worked for a painting company for 20+ years as a bookkeeper, and my husband is a painter. I have moved on from that job a few years now and we want to start venturing out to bid some small jobs to start and get our feet wet as a side job until it can be something full time. I just need to build my confidence in estimating a job. This article is a great start. Thank you very much! Hope to comment again after we have a job under our belt! Bless. Broomfield House Painting
O'Neil patches shallow holes and divots with Ready Patch because it dries fast, sands smooth, and stays flexible. Deep cracks and rotten spots are best repaired with two-step epoxies, such as those made by Advanced Repair Technology. (For a step-by-step instructions, see Repairing Rot with Epoxy.) The days of using polyester auto-body fillers on wood are over. "They cure too hard," says Portland, Oregon–based painting contractor Kathleen George. "They look good at first, but then they peel away."
Hi Cory, one of the biggest problem painters have is not being able to sell their own value. Our prices are usually the highest YET we have the highest closing/sales rate. If you don’t sell the value of your paint job or educate the customer why your price is higher, your bid looks the same as someone who’s lowballing. The customer is not going to know much about the importance of prep or using good materials until you educate them. Then they will prefer your higher price, knowing that the quality in your work is higher.
