Hi Dan, your pricing is definitely going to be on the high end of our pricing tables. Trimming tudor-style jobs can take a long time, especially if you’re cutting in near the body color (painting 3 sides of the trim instead of just the front). The color change is going to increase time even more because you might have to go over the trim a couple times by hand just to cover. I would bid high on this job. House Painting Broomfield Colorado
Hi, I have a house that I’m bidding on, it’s huge about 12.000 sq ft of wall space and 20 -24 ft ceilings many holes to patch from pictures being hung ,that’s just the main, there is also a 3 room in law . The nice part its all going to be one color, off white so spraying is the way to go just have to mask the windows. The outside is mostly vinyl siding so power washing will do but it is 3 floors and has some wood trim that needs to be addressed. Nice part no sanding on inside or out just a little scraping. If I use your formula for pricing looks like about 25 k .Does this sound in the ball park?
When the home owner says they have a 1,600 sqft house that means 1,600 sqft of floor space. That being said, if an owner says it is a certain sqft, you always measure anyway. So if the homeowner says it’s 1,600 sqft and it ended up being 2,000 sqft you could lose $400. ALWAYS measure yourself and double check your math. The math could make or break your painting business
Hi Conaz, good question. There’s a really good breakdown of all painting equipment (cost, supplies list etc.) here . As far as your other costs, I would break it down into categories, similar to how an accountant would do it: Marketing Expense, Insurance/Workers Comp., Gas/Mileage. Once you’ve discovered this monthly overhead you can determine your markup. We always try to make 40-50% gross profit on a paint job before any other expenses. Your net profit will be determined by the size of your business. For example, one painting company with 40 employees may only have a net profit of 10%, but a smaller operation; One owner and one crew may have a net profit of 35%. You should decide beforehand what you want to make per job, factoring in all your costs, and then create a consistent bidding process to make what you want.
Generally speaking, a gallon of paint will cover about 350 square feet. If this is the first time drywall is painted, it will soak up more paint. And remember to factor in whether your job will require one or two coats of paint. Dark and bright colors will require more coats of paint, as will painting a lighter color over an existing darker color. Divide the paintable wall surface by 350 to determine how many gallons of paint you will need to buy. If there’s an odd number with less than .5 leftover, round down, if it’s over .5 round up.
