I have used Flying Colors in the past for roof cleaning and refurbishing and painting my cedar siding. They did an excellent job then so when damage was done to my roof due to a fallen tree I immediately thought of them. I called and within a day they had someone out covering the tree and hole in my roof with a tarp to prevent rain from doing further damage. Hi Conaz, good question. There’s a really good breakdown of all painting equipment (cost, supplies list etc.) here . As far as your other costs, I would break it down into categories, similar to how an accountant would do it: Marketing Expense, Insurance/Workers Comp., Gas/Mileage. Once you’ve discovered this monthly overhead you can determine your markup. We always try to make 40-50% gross profit on a paint job before any other expenses. Your net profit will be determined by the size of your business. For example, one painting company with 40 employees may only have a net profit of 10%, but a smaller operation; One owner and one crew may have a net profit of 35%. You should decide beforehand what you want to make per job, factoring in all your costs, and then create a consistent bidding process to make what you want.
06/14/17: Renato completed an exterior painting project for our relatively large single family home in Stamford, CT last weekend. Project did not begin well especially with the prep, repair/carpentry work, but then Renato took full control and ensured that the work done was to our satisfaction. The final result is outstanding. Minor damage to window screens, gutters and plants. Ensure that your window screens, gutters, and shutters are numbered and stored indoors or if kept outdoor covered properly against the elements. The project can be extensively delayed due to rain and you may find yourself dealing with insects and/or flooding in basement and dirty/bent/ mismatched screens/gutters/shutters. Overall we had a good team working on our project and we are satisfied with the finished product. The house looks great!

When you say trim for an interior paint job are you including the interior doors? I usally charge $25 a side, unless damaged, then it’s $50 a side in addition to the trimwork. Also, I think your calculations for paint needed for new construction are a little low, we just completed a 1550 sq ft house with a couple coats of PVA on the ceinlings & walls, that required 35 gallons of wall/ceiling paint-same [email protected] $20.50 a gallon, and 7 gallons of a waterborne alkyd hybrid for the trim & doors @ $50 a gallon, and a gallon for a fireplace & accent wall color, a couple gallons of primer and 22 tubes of caulk, for a total of about $1450 for paint & supplies. We spray ceilings & trim, and cut & roll walls.

If you have two weeks, a ladder and some experience, this makes an excellent DIY project. On most surfaces, it is forgiving of mistakes and easy to work with. Correcting mistakes only adds more time and not much more expense. However, a professional will get it done faster and with a better finish. Hi Bob, you are correct in saying that ceilings usually take at least 1 coat. Especially if it is an off-white color (which is highly requested from homeowners). We usually factor ceilings in with a standard square footage. For example: $1.50 per square foot would mean $3,000 for a 2,000 square foot house.
